The corporate world can be a very competitive environment and with so many employees vying for the same set of jobs, it can be difficult to reach the goals you have set for your career. Climbing the corporate ladder may seem like a marathon, but with these tips, you can give yourself the edge to reach your goals.

1. Make connections with other professionals outside of your workplace. Network with other like-minded individuals and learn their secrets to success so you can apply those same principles to your career.

2. Take night classes or weekend courses to improve your skill set and make you of a more valuable employee. Select courses that will lead you in the direction you want to go with your career.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Being honest with your boss about where you see yourself in the company opens the lines of communication and allows you more opportunity to guide your own career path.

4. Ask your superiors for constructive criticism. This shows your boss that you are looking for ways to improve your performance and proves that you are taking your position seriously.

5. Work hard from 9-5, but leave work at the office. You may think that by taking work home with you can prove to your boss that you are eager to move up the corporate ladder.  The problem is that over time you are more likely to be fatigued and burnout.  By leaving work at the office, you are allowing yourself time to rejuvenate, thus making your time at work more productive.
