Vending machines are great for convenience and last minute hunger pangs but they are detrimental to your health and your wallet. Overpriced sugar, packaged into chocolate bars, candies, and munchies is detrimental to your health and energy levels. Follow these tips to leave vending machines in the dust.

Plan ahead. Just a small amount of planning goes a long way. Preparing a lunch at home complete with healthy snacks will get you through the workday without the afternoon trip to the vending machine. Change your afternoon break to include a 10 minute walk and a piece of fruit.

Make smarter choices. When on the road, instead of stopping at a convenience store for lunch or a snack, stop at a grocery store instead.  Most grocery stores have freshly made salads, fresh fruit or vegetable trays that are individually prepared.

Save Money. Both planning ahead and smarter choices will save you a considerable amount of money each month.  You will also notice a significant difference in your health as you are eliminating highly processed snack foods.

Employers should be offering healthier options for their employees as well such as nutrient dense granola bars like Clif or Lara Bars, fresh fruit, or trail mix. For smaller work places, an honour system could be implemented to sell healthier options.  For larger corporations, change the options available in your current vending machines.

Education is also the key to success.  Most people are interested in learning how to make better health decisions.  Provide opportunities for staff to learn more about nutrition so they are more likely to make good food choices.
