You’re stuck in traffic or you had to work late. You swing into the nearest fast food restaurant and place your order.

But do you actually know what you’re ordering? Can it even be called food?

french fries

Let’s swing into McDonalds or Wendy’s for a minute and check out their French Fries. Dimethylpolysiloxane1 is a type of silicone used in deep fryers to keep the oil from foaming, which lets the oil last a little bit longer. It is also used in silly putty, breast implants and industrial oils. Mmmmm.

Next, we’ll hop over to Tim Horton’s for a breakfast sandwich. Hiding in the cured meats you just ordered (bacon, ham, sausage) is a preservative and flavouring called sodium nitrite1. It can also be found in pharmaceuticals, dyes and pesticides. It’s been associated with colorectal cancer and a higher likelihood of heart disease. Mmmmm.

What about KFC, for some chicken strips and MSG. Monosodium Glutamate1 – a flavour enhancer and seasoning that can cause headaches, nausea and chest pain. It’s also used in agricultural fertilizers. Mmmmm.

Still hungry? How about dessert… Let’s hit Burger King for a Cinnamon Roll filled with Yellow Dye #5 (Tartrazine) and #6 (Sunset Yellow)1. These artificial colours have been associated with hyperactivity and behaviour problems in children, as well as cancer. They can also be found in nail polish, soap and many other products. You should also avoid all of the artificial colour spectrum found in a variety of foods.

So what is the Solution????

If at all possible (and it’s usually possible!!) bring your own food. Fresh, whole foods, lots of water and snacks are best when you’ve created them at home and brought them along.

Great travelling snacks are vegetable sticks and hummus, apple slices, a bag of raw nuts and seeds, dried fruit, a banana, or fresh berries are excellent options. Avoid the drive-through, the walk-in and grabbing ‘quick-bites’ as often as possible! Your health will thank you immensely!
