For most of us, Remembrance Day is remembered quietly for a few minutes on November 11.  Some of us take the time to pay our respects, and for others, it’s just another day.  For me, I’ve always been particularly proud to be a Canadian at this time of the year.  I’m grateful for my country and all of its bountiful pleasures and joys.

This Remembrance Day commemorates my son’s completion of his first year with the Canadian Forces – a year of change in our lives.

Colin, my son,  stands proud in his uniform. He takes his career and duties with the utmost seriousness. He has forged relationships with the men and women that serve our country that will never be broken. He has the respect of many Canadians that have thanked him for his service – short as it has been. He has seen the amazement in the eyes of young children whispering, ‘he’s a soldier’. Yes, he is. A proud one at that.

I’ve had the pleasure of having numerous Canadian Forces men visit during this year, joining my son on a weekend leave – the stories, the training, the strength they all exhibit is beyond words.  It does take courage, bravery and determination to succeed but the one behavior that is heart warming, is their constant support for one another. Men and women from across our country – best buds without time to grow their friendship. Purpose brings them together. This is the soul of Remembrance Day.

Take the time to shake a soldier’s hand – to say thank you. One of them could be my son.
